Getting ready for next tour with Valdy & Karel... this time we have 9 stops in B.C. and one in Ontario. T – shirts are ready, and we have printed all the towns on them (Prince George, Burns Lake, Grassy Plains, Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rubert, Smithers, Quesnel, North Pender Island and Almonte, Ontario). Video is almost ready and will be released soon.
Between concerts, I head to Eugene to play an after-hours Arts Northwest showcase with Guy as step one in our plan to tour the U.S. in 2015-16.
Going to State University of New York at Fredonia to play Dana Wilson’s concerto for bassoon and wind ensemble on October 25, then a recital and other things for their ninth annual Double Reed Day!
Loved (LOVED) my experience in the Southern USA and made many new friends and ate things I never dreamed of eating (e.g. deep fried pickles and more) — a free night in New Orleans, heard Leroy Jones at Preservation Hall, then on to University of Southern Mississippi with the really lovely and talented Dr Kim Woolly, rehearsing with the stellar faculty (strings, piano, bassoons). Had the time of my life in Memphis with the dynamic Dr Lecolion Washington, a visionary comrade... if we lived in the same city, who knows what projects would emerge! I’ve returned to Toronto inspired to bring a version of his Bassoonapalooza to our northern clime.
August was a seismic month for me, touring with Valdy and Karel, playing concert societies and my first folk festivals (Kingsville & Summerfolk) and recording a video (filmed by Paramita Nath) on our day off in Toronto (Bernadette/Vivaldi/Dreams About You) then taking some of that life-changing experience to share with the beautiful, talented students at Brooke Valley Bassoon Days. Shane Wieler brought his full sound system along with 4 bocals that he had prepared with mic mounts for the Little Jake, along with the L. R. Baggs pre-amps and we gave the students a whirlwind introduction to amplification, pedal effects and improv... made my heart glad that they were still jamming when I left.
Composer Constantine Caravassilis has won a full Ontario Arts Council commissioning grant to write my next bassoon concerto (working title: Silver Angel) which I will premiere on June 12, 2015 with Thirteen Strings in Ottawa, led by Kevin Mallon. The concert is called Message in a Bottle after a string work by Constatine Caravassilis.
