My tour with Valdy and Karel to Northern B. C. (Prince George, Burns Lake, Terrace, Kitimat, Smithers, Quesnel), then to Pender Island and Almonte, Ontario was one of the most wonderful experiences of my career. Revisiting the wild landscapes of my childhood when my parents were cattle ranchers while playing concerts with two incredibly vibrant and musical people. Bassist Joe Phillips joined us in Almonte which was fantastic too.
On October 25, I will play Dana Wilson’s “Avatar” for solo bassoon and wind ensemble with SUNY Fredonia’s Wind Ensemble, led by Paula Halcombe. This concert will also feature the great composer Michael Colgrass.
Then on October 26 I have the honour of participating as soloist and teacher at the ninth annual Fredonia Double Reed Day. On the joint recital with the Fredonia profs Laura Koepke and Sarah Hamilton, I will also play 3 Short Stories for bassoon and viola with David Rose.
Loved (LOVED) my experience in the Southern USA and made many new friends and ate things I never dreamed of eating (e.g. deep fried pickles and more) — a free night in New Orleans, heard Leroy Jones at Preservation Hall, then on to University of Southern Mississippi with the really lovely and talented Dr Kim Woolly, rehearsing with the stellar faculty (strings, piano, bassoons). Had the time of my life in Memphis with the dynamic Dr Lecolion Washington, a visionary comrade... if we lived in the same city, who knows what projects would emerge! I’ve returned to Toronto inspired to bring a version of his Bassoonapalooza to our northern clime
Composer Constantine Caravassilis has won a full Ontario Arts Council commissioning grant to write my next bassoon concerto (working title: Silver Angel) which I will premiere on June 12, 2015 with Thirteen Strings in Ottawa, led by Kevin Mallon. The concert is called Message in a Bottle after a string work by Constatine Caravassilis.
